How to build a ride-hailing app like Uber or Ola: features, tech and timeline

A ride-hailing platform is a rider app, a driver app and an admin console, joined by dispatch, tracking and payments. What each one needs.

Screens of the BobsRide ride-hailing concept: booking a ride, a driver on the way and driver earnings

Short answer: a ride-hailing platform is at least three products: a rider app, a driver app and an admin console, joined by real-time dispatch, live tracking, fares and payments. We have built and operated ride-hailing platforms for Africar in Nigeria and Baayu in India, and our BobsRide concept packages that experience into a ready-to-build design.

The rider app

  • Sign-up with a phone number and OTP.
  • Pick-up and drop on a map, with saved places.
  • A choice of rides, such as auto, bike or cab, each with a fare estimate.
  • Booking now or later, with the driver's details and live tracking.
  • Payment by cash, UPI, card or wallet, with a clear bill.
  • Ratings, ride history, referrals and an SOS button.

The driver app

  • Onboarding with profile, vehicle details and documents for verification.
  • Going online and offline, with ride requests that expire if not accepted.
  • Navigation to the pick-up, an OTP to start the trip, and navigation to the drop.
  • Earnings by day and week, payouts and incentives.

The admin console

Live trips on a map, driver verification, fares and zones, payouts, refunds, promotions and support. Your operations team lives here, so it deserves as much design as the apps.

The hard parts

How a ride is dispatched, from request to payment
From a request to a paid trip

Dispatch

When a rider books, the system finds nearby available drivers, ranks them and offers the trip to one driver at a time, moving on if they do not accept in time. Good dispatch balances pick-up time, driver fairness and acceptance rates.

Live tracking

Both apps show each other's position in real time, which needs location updates, a real-time channel and careful battery and cost management. We explain it in how live tracking works.

Fares and payments

Fares combine a base fare, distance and time, with rules for waiting, tolls and busy periods. Payments must handle cash collected by drivers as well as online payments, with clear settlement to drivers.

Safety

Driver verification, trip sharing, an SOS button, OTP to start a trip and support that responds quickly. These are what riders remember.

Launching and running it

A ride-hailing platform is as much operations as software: onboarding drivers, managing supply in each zone and handling support. If you want to launch fast without building a full technology team, consider a build, operate and transfer model, the way we worked with Africar and Baayu.

How long it takes

It depends on the cities, vehicle types, payment methods and integrations you need. We confirm a timeline after a short workshop, and starting from the BobsRide design saves the weeks that design would otherwise take.

Frequently asked questions

What apps does a ride-hailing platform need?

A rider app, a driver app and an admin console for operations, plus a backend that handles dispatch, live tracking, fares, payments and payouts.

How does a ride-hailing app match riders with drivers?

The dispatch system finds available drivers near the pick-up, ranks them by distance and other factors, and offers the trip to one driver at a time, moving on if the offer is not accepted in time.

Can you build and run the platform for us?

Yes. We have built, operated and transferred ride-hailing platforms for Africar and Baayu, and can work on a build, operate and transfer model.
